Deb here. Another perfect weather day, although it was also rumored to be the hottest day of the week (temps reaching 90). The boat had traveled all night and we were supposed to be docking in Tulln at 8 a.m. and riding our bikes by 9:30 or so, but we learned that due to the historic low water levels in the Danube, our boat had to stop at night for a few hours while some water was released to create enough water for the ships passing through. I can’t imagine scheduling all of this since the boat traffic on the Danube is heavy.
Anyway, as a result we had a leisurely morning hanging out on the deck while the boat cruised toward Vienna. It was actually quite pleasant having time to chat with some of our fellow passengers and we had some great conversations with our midwestern friends.
We finally started biking at 12:30, with a bit over 30 km to go for the day. Another beautiful ride on the bike path next to the Danube. Lots of bikers on the path today, especially since we learned another Rad + Reisen boat, the MS Vivienne, was following the same stops as our boat since their itinerary had changed. The plan for their bike adventure was to go all the way to Budapest, but due to the low water levels the ship has to stop in Vienna and everyone’s then bused from there. I imagine there are a lot of not too happy bikers on that boat!
At about 1:30 we found a cafe along the bike path to grab a picnic table in the shade, eat our lunches and buy drinks inside. Lots of fellow bikers there and we shared our table with two women from Australia.
Back on the path, which turned into more urban biking as we neared Vienna. We made it to our boat by 3:30, enjoyed strawberry lemonade, tea, coffee and snacks and hung out for a while before heading to our cabin for showers. Dinner on deck tonight was a pirate-themed affair and very fun. Good food, conversation and a beautiful evening followed by some music.
