We did not write this down so this is from memory. We drove into the city of Avignon and spent the day walking the streets. We parked a little outside town and walked in, seeing the famous Avignon Bridge (which only goes part way across the river). We decided not to pay to go up on the bridge but walked under it and got some photos from either side, better than from the bridge (I am guessing).
We toured through the Palace of the Popes. They had an iPad based virtual reality thing that was kind of hokey but it did help us visualize what it was like back then. Never understood that the Popes were in France back then and not in Rome.
We walked all over the city and then walked back to the car and drove back to Pernes-les-Fontaines. The big excitement was playing boules with the locals. The Untours rep, Anne, set it up and we walked to the local park where everyone plays boules. It is basically bocce but they drink after (we drink during the game here in the states).
The local guys held back so as not to embarrass us so we had a great time. There were not many folks who spoke English but Anne handled the interpretation. Very nice folks and a great evening.
